Meals at Quinta dos Três Rios had a lovely communal feel. We shared stories with other guests over seasonal food grown on the property, and Hugh’s port was poured from a small wooden keg and passed to the left, following ship tradition. There were plenty of refills. Jane’s care showed up in all the details. Breakfast included homemade macerated figs, farm fruit, two kinds of fresh English bread, jams, kefir water with lemon and ginger, and gluten-free banana bread made especially for a friend. Later we had canapés made with their olives and eggplants and crawfish from the river, then a beautiful dinner with Hugh’s wines. The rooms are in a beautifully restored 19th-century farmhouse in the heart of the Dão wine region. Hugh and Jane, British expats, welcomed us like old friends. Our spacious suite had high ceilings, maple floors, antique furniture, and a balcony looking out over the gardens and waterfall. It was cozy and full of character, a great base for exploring. Hugh is chatty and enthusiastic, with a twinkle in his eye. He showed us his winery facilities in a nearby village, where he makes red, rosé, sparkling, and port-style wines. Some bottles in the cellar are over 10 years old. He showed us how strong his homemade aguardente was by lighting a splash, and one evening he sabered a sparkling bottle with a family heirloom sword from the 1850s. The warm welcome, farmhouse, homegrown food, and Hugh’s stories made this one of our most memorable stops in Portugal. It felt like being welcomed into someone’s home, not just staying at a B&B. Highly recommended if you want to experience the heart of the Dão.

The grounds are beautiful, with the steady, charming sound of a little waterfall. We spent two nights at this lovely find and enjoyed every minute. Jane and Hugh were wonderful hosts, and dinner was outstanding both nights. We also loved their two cats and dog. It was great to relax by the fireplace with wine and tasty nibbles. Hugh took us to see their Wine 'Caves', which was a lot of fun. I can't recommend Quinta dos Tres Rios highly enough.

We had a suite with a big sitting room and bedroom, both larger than our seaside cottage. The house looks out over the river, grounds, and vineyard in an idyllic setting. Hugh and Jane made us feel like newly found family, and the old saying about arriving as guests and leaving as friends really fits Quinta dos Três Rios. We’d recommend eating in. Jane serves canapés and a three-course meal, honest home cooking of a very high standard, with much of it picked from the garden that morning. While she cooks, Hugh takes you through bottles of delicious wine made on site, and even the digestif is homemade. There’s plenty to do nearby, and the website has suggested self-guided days out with detailed driving and exploring instructions. A real hidden gem.

I have such fond childhood memories of visiting with my family several times. My sister, friends, and I ran around the property with the dogs, helped harvest grapes, and even stomped them. The food was delicious, and the building and grounds always felt magical. Hugh and Jane were fantastic hosts. I hope to return someday!

The highlight of our trip to Portugal was our stay at Quinta dos Tres Rios. The spacious, well-appointed rooms looked across the farm, rivers, and valley, and Hugh and Jane made us feel right at home. The home-cooked food was amazing, from the jams and chutneys to their homegrown wine. We came from New Zealand because our daughter had worked there for two months seven years ago and loved it so much. We’d hoped to visit the area, meet Hugh and Jane, and see the paradise she often talks about. The peaceful countryside around the village of Parada da Gonta was just what we’d hoped for, a side of Portugal you don’t see in Porto or Lisbon. Whether you want a quiet country break or a lovely base for excursions to the Douro region, Quinta dos Tres Rios is a great place to stay.
