Hotel Laranjeira

The staff were outstanding, and the hotel was lovely. My room was neat and very clean, with plenty of outlets.

I wouldn’t recommend this for Camino pilgrims. My room was cramped, with huge beams hanging down across the ceiling at about five feet. They were impossible to avoid, and I kept hitting my head on the side of one. The shower was so narrow I could barely turn around. The breakfast area was tight, with very few tables. I waited half an hour without finding a seat and ended up skipping breakfast altogether. It wasn’t comfortable, and they weren’t very accommodating.

The service was remarkably good for a two star hotel. At check-in, they already had all my information, so I didn’t need to fill anything out, and someone walked me to my room with my bag. I haven’t had that kind of treatment since a five star hotel in Asia. The manager also asked whether an 8 am breakfast start would work, and was happy to arrange 7:30 when I asked. That kind of flexibility is rare. The hotel is just steps from the centre, and my room had a shared patio that was nice for sitting in the afternoon sun. Great location and value. I recommend it.

The standout here was receptionist Eduardo, whose friendly, positive hospitality made me feel as if I’d checked into a 5 star hotel. His colleague was just as helpful and accommodating, and nothing seemed to be a problem. The hotel itself is extremely clean and well maintained, right in the heart of Viana do Castelo. My room was basic but modern, with a clean, comfortable bed, and I slept very well. Breakfast was basic too, but they let me pack a small lunch for my Camino walk. Thank you for a wonderful stay. I loved it and highly recommend it if you’re in the area.
