296 Heritage Apartments

The room was quiet and comfortable, and I was sorry I couldn't stay longer. From there, the Douro, the old town, and the beautiful Luis bridge were all in view throughout the day. Restaurants and wine bars are close by, and the main sights are walkable.

Right by the river, the hotel made it easy to get to the bridge and upper neighborhood. The room was spotless, with a compact kitchen and a fairly roomy bathroom. Staff were lovely and helpful, and for New Year they even stopped by each room to share a glass of port wine.

The room service breakfast came at the time we requested, and the portions were generous enough to keep us going all day. The apartment also had a handy kitchenette, though finding decent groceries nearby was tricky, the walkable mercados weren't much good. We were there for two nights, with port tasting tours just along the river, about 100 meters away in either direction. The cable car station and gift shops were an easy walk too.

The rooms are huge, with a separate bedroom, kitchenette and living area, plus a decent bathroom with a shower. Water pressure was good, though the temperature controls were limited. The AC worked great. The place calls itself 296 Heritage Apartments, but it felt like a hotel to me. Desk and cleaning service are limited, and if you arrive outside staffed hours, you need to ask the restaurant next door to call someone. I arrived during normal hours, so that wasn't an issue. They charged a 5 euro per person per day tax upfront, cash only. I thought that seemed a bit shady, though it appears to be legitimate, so keep it in mind. It's on the river, squeezed between two restaurants, with plenty to do nearby in Gaia. Porto is across the bridge, which I found myself walking over at least once a day. If I come back to Porto, I'll check availability here before trying somewhere else.
