The accommodation at Villa Gorilla is comfortable, though simple. There aren’t fancy couches or a designer lounge, and there are pricier places nearby if that’s what you want. What you do get is an incredible location, lovely gardens, and unmatched views of the Virunga Mountains. The multi-course meals were epic, and Lisa & Andrew shared a wealth of local knowledge, connections, and stories. We had a great time visiting mountain gorillas in Volcanoes Nat’l Park, and two unexpected highlights made the trip even better: a traditional cooking class at a Musanze Cooperative Farm, and our driver and cultural attaché, Wilson. He’s a genuine person and an endless source of information. Lisa, the Villa Gorilla host, arranged and curated it all.

We surprised my fiancé with a birthday trip to Villa Gorilla for a cooking class with Andrew and Lisa, and had such a fantastic day. We made fresh bagels and ricotta, then ate herbed cream cheese, smoked salmon, poached eggs with hollandaise, dessert, and plenty more. The lessons, laughs with our hosts, lovely gardens and view, and playful pups made the whole day feel perfect. Whether you’re planning a Rwanda vacation or just a day trip, this is a great place to land. You won’t regret it.

Lisa and Andrew at Villa Gorilla organized our whole six-day trip, and we were so glad we found them. We spent two days gorilla trekking and one day golden monkey trekking, with afternoons visiting local markets, museums, an art gallery, chocolate shops, and a banana beer facility. They tailored their services to our needs and provided a Western standard of service. They moved from New York to Rwanda a few years ago. Villa Gorilla has several villas and rooms, with a beautiful garden as the centerpiece, and is only a few minutes from the park headquarters. The rooms have African-style decor, and the delicious meals were at the level of New York restaurant food. We had a fantastic trip.

The hosts were helpful and communicative before we arrived, checking what food we’d enjoy and advising us on what to bring for the gorilla trek. We spent one night at Villa Gorilla before seeing the Mountain Gorillas the next morning, and had a great stay. The hosts were incredibly friendly, the food was amazing, and the 12-course “food safari” was a treat. They also made breakfast at 6 a.m. so we’d be ready for the day. The rooms were comfortable and each had its own character, with local art on the walls. The mountain views were fantastic too. I’d highly recommend Villa Gorilla for anyone visiting Volcanoes National Park.
