Rekona Lodge

Everything in Gizo is within walking distance, and Rekona Lodge made a nice base for exploring. I stayed a couple of nights and found it quaint, with a warm, accommodating host. They welcomed me with a complimentary coconut drink. The rooms are basic but spacious and comfortable. Spiders, mosquitoes and geckos turned up as unexpected animal flatmates. I didn’t mind, though the mosquitoes certainly liked me. Customer care was excellent. Wi-Fi was poor, only available around the lobby and kitchen/balcony, and it didn’t work for me at all. I didn’t use the shared kitchen, but it looked adequate. The price felt right for what you get, and I’d come back for the friendly atmosphere and rustic charm.

The staff were really nice and helpful, but the property isn’t well cared for. The sheets and pillows are pretty old, the furniture is dated, and the rooms weren’t clean to a good standard. The kitchen wasn’t very clean either and smelled a lot. Water came through the showers and taps painfully slowly, and there were quite a few mosquitoes in the rooms. Ask for a coil.

Rekona Lodge is centrally located but quiet, and the staff are all super friendly and helpful. We stayed over a week, and I think it’s the best place in town. The large upstairs rooms are lovely, with wooden floors and panelling, plus air conditioning, an electric kettle, a fridge and a balcony. The lodge is kept very clean.

We spent a month at Rekona while on a medical placement, six of us in all. Ivan, Tanya and the girls were so lovely to us. The rooms had air conditioning and were cleaned every day, and there were facilities for washing clothes. The shower temperature depended on the sun and rain water, but we had no problems. The shared kitchen was useful for cooking fresh food from the market, though it could get busy and a bit messy. The girls cleaned it every morning. I’d recommend bringing mosquito nets to hang up yourself, and Tupperware if you plan to cook. Thanks for a great stay!
