Gothia Towers & Upper House

My room on the 10th floor, number 1028, was quiet and I slept well. The hotel is a basic, clean 3/4 star business place. The bathroom worked fine but looked like a hospital room, and I missed having things like a Nespresso machine and ironing facilities. Breakfast was good, though for such a big hotel I expected a more exciting spread, maybe an omelette station or more kinds of fruit. Everything else was nice and clean, but the windows weren't, as the photo shows.

I particularly liked the restaurant and bar on the top floor, with good food and drinks and an impressive panorama over the city. Service was generally friendly and professional despite the scale of the hotel. It's a large, busy place, so breakfast can feel hectic and the atmosphere more big-hotel than boutique, but it was comfortable and well run. The location is excellent, right beside Liseberg and close to everything Gothenburg offers, and the upper-floor views are fantastic. I'd happily stay again.

The spa was really relaxing, and the suspended glass swimming pool was such a unique thing to experience. Breakfast was excellent, with a wide selection and genuinely good quality food. My room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the huge hotel has a very modern, stylish design. I'd gladly stay here again.

I loved the hotel and the spa, but what happened with the cab was deeply disappointing. My friend uses a cane, and although the distance was walkable, it was a bit much for her. I asked reception to call a cab because I'd been warned about “black cabs” and didn't want to just pick one up outside. The receptionist said there were cabs waiting, but other guests took them while we were talking. I asked again and she refused, then walked outside with us. A cab pulled up about 30 seconds later. The staff member spoke to the driver and told us he would take us. The short ride cost me three times what it should have, and the amount charged to my card was higher than what I was shown when paying. I asked the hotel to help sort it out, but after being passed among five employees and explaining it repeatedly, they said they wouldn't help. The woman who told me this said I should have known it was a “black cab.” But how could I tell? It had a legitimate cab company logo, and her staff member had spoken to the driver and directed us to take it. It's very disappointing that a hotel like this won't take responsibility, and worse that it enables travelers to be taken advantage of. The hotel is worth a stay, but don't take a cab. Use Uber or Bolt, and don't accept one even if a staff member suggests it.
