The breakfast is one of the best I’ve had at a hotel restaurant anywhere. There’s sourdough bread, delicious authentic salted butter, herring, and eggs made whichever way you like. The location is great too.

We really liked the food and drinks. The portions were generous, so we felt full, and we didn’t mind waiting a little for the next dish. Service was really slow, though. Another hotel had recommended the restaurant. We walked over from there, so I can’t say how easy it is to find this hotel.

The service wasn’t good, and the AC barely worked. At 2 am, the fire alarm woke us, and everyone had to leave the building for 50 minutes while the firemen searched the whole hotel. Apparently it was an old sensor system. Staff didn’t count guests or explain what had happened, even when we asked afterward, and nobody apologized for the disruption. After that ordeal, which traumatized our kids, they still refused a late checkout. I can’t recommend it.

Breakfast looked like it had a good selection at first, but the food was left uncovered and flies were landing on the meat, cheese, and fruit. When I put my spoon into the open container of sultanas, a cloud of flies came out. I didn’t want to risk getting ill, so we left and ate at a local supermarket café. The paintings on the walls were all protected behind glass, and eating there felt like dining in an art gallery. It came across as a vanity project by the owners. I don’t think I’d stay again because I value my health. The hotel itself felt oversized for Skara and sits beside a major road, though the large car park was well lit. Check-in was easy, and there were two lifts. One opens on both sides, so you need to choose the right side. Our room was okay and clean, but the road noise carried in. As seems common, our booked double was two single beds pushed together. The room safe was unusable because it was locked open. We arrived late and walked to McDs for a quick bite. We wished we hadn’t, as it was dirty and felt unsafe.
