Slottsholmen hotell och restaurang

This is about the restaurant, not the excellent hotel. The service was terrible, especially from our waiter. We waited about 10 minutes to be seated at a lovely table by the window, then our assigned waiter ignored us. After about 15 minutes we managed to order drinks and dinner. The drinks arrived roughly 25 minutes later, but no food came. After waiting about an hour, I went to ask the waiter what was happening and got a blank stare. A more experienced staff member checked and found that our order had never been submitted, so we decided to leave. The server said they'd just charge us for the drinks and appetizer. We walked out after 1 1/2 hours, having had one beer, one glass of mediocre wine, and cold garlic toast, for $50. Not a great experience. I'd eat somewhere else.

The hotel is in a fantastic spot on Slotsholmen in Västervik, and some of its rooms are built over the water. That gives those rooms a really unique setting. Slottsholmen Hotell & Restaurang is an unusual and interesting hotel, with the added detail that it's owned by Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA. We stayed in a spacious two-room suite in the main building. The smaller rooms are in the building over the water. We hadn't expected regular apartments, rather than hotel space, above the suites. The suite felt like a home away from home, with a lovely water view, a good-sized kitchen, and even a record player with old hits. We'd definitely stay again, and for longer next time. There were a few things that could be better. The bedroom exhaust fan made quite a bit of noise and couldn't be switched off, though it wasn't loud enough to keep us from sleeping. The small fitness room had an okay range of machines, but I would have liked something for leg training. Upper body workouts were easy enough. We ate at the restaurant once. It was a bit odd that it didn't have its own name and was just part of the hotel, but the food was really good and I can recommend it. We didn't visit the bar, though it looked nice. Breakfast was what you'd expect from a hotel like this. I wished the coffee were a little better, but otherwise it was as it should be. Slottsholmen Hotell & Restaurang is on my list of Sweden's best hotels, and I'll be back. It's worth a visit.

There’s great bouldering nearby, and this was a lovely spot to return to after spending the day outdoors. We had a comfortable room with a fantastic view, and stayed for one night. Dinner was lovely: nettle soup, duck, and some very nice wine. Breakfast was brilliant, with homemade bread and granola, plus a ginger shot. The restaurant staff were all friendly, and Martin at reception was especially cheerful and welcoming. We had a lovely stay and will definitely be back soon.
