Penzión Hradby

The receptionist was very kind and tried hard to communicate despite her limited English. That was about the only bright spot on my return stay. I first stayed at this penzion in 2019, before COVID, and was pleased with the service given the limited hotel options in the city then, so I gave it four stars. I came back in June 2023 and have dropped the rating to two. I called to reserve, and the owner offered an apartment “right next door.” I didn’t mind being in a different building, but when I arrived at midnight, Veronika, a very nice lady, met me at the hotel and drove me there. It was clearly not next door. The warm weather made that seem manageable, and the attic apartment seemed fine at first too. But the wifi only had one bar in certain spots, and the sloping roof cut through the shower, so I had to squat and wash one part at a time. Hot water ran cold in about five minutes. During my three-day stay, nobody came to clean or change towels. At 8:30 on my last morning, the cleaner knocked. I asked her to return later since I planned to check out by noon, but soon after, Veronika called and said checkout was at 10. I was really upset: no internet, proper shower, hot water, or room service, and now I was being asked to leave early. The reception was two kilometers away and it was raining, so I asked Veronika to pick up my luggage and take it there for me to collect before my flight at noon. She said she wasn’t in Presov. There was nowhere in the two-storey house to leave my bags, unless I put them out on the street. In the end, I stayed until 11:30 and then left. I’m changing my rating from four stars in 2019 to two in 2023, and I won’t return. The city has much better options now than it did before COVID.

The city center and this accommodation were both pleasant surprises. The room was clean and lovely, parking was available, and the staff were kind and helpful. We got a welcome drink when we arrived, local šariš beer.

Good location and fair prices. The staff were very friendly, the rooms were big, and everything looked modern, clean, and good. I’d definitely recommend staying here.

I’m glad we tried just one night before our December booking. We couldn’t even make it through the night and ended up escaping somewhere else to sleep, so I’d rather have lost that one night’s rate than spend Christmas week there. The apartment looked renovated and modern. I liked the corner bathtub, and that was about all I liked. There was no welcome information with the wifi name and password. Reception gave us a tiny piece of paper, but the password didn’t work. There were no instructions for the satellite TV either, as if everyone is supposed to know how to set it up. The double bed was quite large, but having two single mattresses and two small duvets didn’t work for me. One bulb was missing from the bedside lamp, and when I put my head on the pillow, I could see cobwebs all over the ceiling. The fridge was a nice addition, but it was loud and kept disturbing my sleep. I couldn’t fall asleep with another unidentified noise either, maybe air conditioning. The house welcome drink might have been a nice touch, except ours was just a very expensive fruit juice. We’ve definitely cancelled our Christmas stay at this penzion.
