Hotel Metropol

Parking was very easy, though the signs weren’t clear, especially coming from the west. The lobby and restaurant are nice, and the bed was comfortable, but the room felt dated and the floor needs work. There’s no a/c, and the refrigerator was noisy. The toilet is very small. It seemed a bit overpriced, though I’d still generally recommend it. It is a four star hotel.

For what we paid, the service and facilities were a really pleasant surprise. The food was good value, and breakfast was superb, with lots of choices including gluten free options. We also enjoyed the wellness area. Swim suits aren’t allowed, only sheets to cover up with, so you might see naked people walking around. We didn’t let that bother us.

At 4AM, we weren’t sure we’d be let into the Local Hotel or welcomed when we weren’t even staying there. My friend and I had arrived in Spisska Nova Ves in the middle of the night by train, hoping to hike in the nearby nature reserve before catching another train to our next vacation spot. We’d read online that someone was at reception 24/7 and that baggage could be stored for a fee. The receptionist was kind about letting us leave our bags, called a Taxi to take us to the nature reserve, and chatted with us while we waited. I wish we’d remembered to take a picture with him. Those small, personal moments are what we’ll remember about our vacations years from now. Thanks Marek, you’re the best!

The prices are far too high for the quality on offer, and I don’t think this hotel meets a 4-star standard. There was no hot water in the bathroom one evening, and the room had no kit for making hot drinks, which was apparently only available in “exclusive” rooms. We had only a fan, while the windows tilted open just a little, making it hard to ventilate. Cleanliness was also poor: there were cobwebs on the toilet door, dust on the furniture, and dirty floor coverings. Housekeeping just came in and tossed towels onto a chair without making the bed. For two days, nobody collected the dirty glasses we’d been given after asking us to leave the bar. When we brought them to reception to exchange them, they said they didn’t know what to do with them (sic). The following day I had to ask for the room to be cleaned. That’s ridiculous.
