I arrived in Somone with all my surf gear and no room, after the owner gave away the one I thought I had booked. She had asked me on WhatsApp for a 50 percent deposit. I told her I wasn't comfortable sending money to someone I'd never met, given stories I'd heard about certain members of the Nigerian royal family, and asked if that would be a problem. I said I could book an Airbnb instead if it was. She said it was fine to pay on arrival. I booked a car from Dakar and messaged her both when I booked it and as we were leaving Dakar. She didn't mention any problem. When I got there, she told me she'd given the room to someone else and offered a much more expensive suite, but only for two nights. I ended up walking around Somone with all my gear, though thankfully I found somewhere else to stay. My first thought was that she was trying to run a scam, but then I remembered Hanlon's razor: never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.
