Sutopia Holiday Resort

The people at Sutopia Holiday Resort made everything easy, from booking and communication with Lieke to the welcome and care from Christel. We loved our two-night anniversary stay and would happily come back. The room, number 6, had air conditioning and a stocked kitchen with tea, coffee, sugar, cooking oil, salt, and pepper. They'd decorated it beautifully for our anniversary, a really thoughtful touch. Breakfast was included, with fresh bread, butter, cheese, eggs from the hens on site, and yoghurt. We spent a lovely bit of time on the porch outside our lodge, listening to the birds and other wildlife. The restaurant and bar area has a laid-back feel, and the bar runs on an honesty system: take a drink and write it on the chalkboard. There are books and games too. We had a delicious, well-prepared dinner at the restaurant one night, and used the BBQ another night. We were glad to hear the menu may be expanded soon. The calm, relaxed dogs sometimes come sit by your feet. Behind the lodges there's a large chicken coop and a little enclosure for rescued boa constrictors. Matt, one of the snake handlers, let us handle one, which was a real treat. Further along the path, a viewing deck and benches look out over the Suriname River. Such a beautiful view. What a place, from the moment we arrived until we left, we were so well looked after and nothing seemed too much effort. Thank you all at Sutopia Holiday Resort, see you again soon.

The atmosphere is airy and serene, one of Commewijne's hidden gems. I enjoyed a swim around noon, then a good meal at the restaurant, and watched the sunset from the dock at dusk :)

I loved the artistic setting and the obvious care for nature. Chickens, snakes, and all the greenery helped make it feel like an unforgettable oasis. The rooms were quaint and comfortable, with air conditioning and a pantry and fridge stocked with things like chocolate spread, peanut butter, eggs, and cheese. The dining space was great, with a record player, sofas, and an honesty bar. The food was superb, with good vegetarian choices. After hikes and canoeing, the hammocks and a book from the lending library were just right, and the staff were delightful. The guides were phenomenal and each had a style of their own. Don was a favorite: sharp-eyed, very smart, and funny. He was also kind and diplomatic when I yelled because a leaf fell on my head and I thought it was a spider, and when I mistook grass caught around my boot for a snake. Ash's curiosity and enthusiasm rubbed off on me, and no question felt silly. Both knew a lot about the jungle's plants and animals. Leike felt like an old friend right away, and I miss her good humor and pleasant manner. The chefs were phenomenal too, though sadly I forgot their names. I can't say enough good things about the place, and hope I can make it back soon.

Lieke is such a lovely host, welcoming and friendly. We stayed two nights and had the best experience, almost like being at a family resort 😍
