This review is only about the laundry service Hostal Doña Mercedes offers tourists. I was staying in Juayua longer than a typical tourist and needed to get clothes washed locally. My hotel told me Hostal Doña Mercedes was the only laundrette in town, so I went there. He smiled and said it would cost $10. It was the most expensive wash I've paid for anywhere in the Americas, but I badly needed clean clothes, so I paid. When I collected them later that day, they were still dirty, with obvious streaks from my hikes in the area. I can only guess someone dipped them gently in water instead of putting them through a machine. They'd also been crammed carelessly into the sack. I've seen burglars pack stolen things into a van more carefully. The clothes came out creased like an old man's head. If the charge had been lower, I wouldn't give Hostal Doña Mercedes such a pathetic little rating. But I paid a king's ransom and expected clean clothes fit for a king. I hope some young entrepreneur notices the gap in the Juayua market and opens “The Great Juayua Lavandería.” The Mayor of El Salvador and I would happily attend opening night.
