Dhevi Bangkok Hotel

The location made this a handy base for a short Bangkok visit. We could walk to Siam square, and the hotel has some subtle Thai touches in its decor. Our room was small but very clean and tidy, and the staff were friendly. If you’ll spend most of your time out and mainly need a place to sleep, it works well. For the price, the service was better than I expected and it felt like good value.

We stayed at dhevi's for about six days at the end of our time in thailand. The area was quiet, with mostly locals and some maintenance shops. A tuktuk company is right across from the hotel, so it was usually easy to step outside and get a ride. Walk straight left to the end of the street and there’s a 7-eleven; further along are places for Thai food, fish and ramen. MBK is about 1.5 km away, and on busy roads or at busy times I’d suggest getting a grab scooter. Our room was on the 4th floor. It had a distinctive style, with art and drawings on the walls, and was very clean. The airco worked well and wasn’t pointed at our faces. We got fresh water bottles every day, even when we put out the do not disturb tag, they left them beside the room. The bathroom was on the small side, but the shower had good heat and strong water pressure. The floor gets very slippery with soap, though. My partner slipped taking just a small step and was lucky not to get badly hurt. When we arrived, the very friendly staff welcomed us with big smiles, and we had a nice chat.

The room felt cramped and uncomfortable, with barely enough space to unpack a suitcase. It was dirty too, with candy wrappers by the headboard. In the shower, only one set of toiletries was provided, and the shower head pointed straight at the wall, so I had to hold it to wash properly. The room’s decor seemed cluttered and haphazard, more dust collectors than a thought-out design. At $90 a night, it didn’t feel worth the money. We’d booked one large bed, but got two separate beds. I was staying with my boyfriend, and the staff were unfriendly about it. Are we in Thailand or Afghanistan?… The receptionist was the exception, he was nice and friendly. The streets around the hotel looked like something out of The Walking Dead. At night there were homeless people on the road; in daytime I saw abandoned cars, trash everywhere and animal feces. This wasn’t a comfortable stay and the price was far too high.

We loved our six days here on our second trip to Bangkok. We like walking, and the location suited us: Ratchathewi station is 900 metres away, MBK is 1 km, and Siam Square and Siam Paragon are around 1.5 to 1.7 km. On the walk to the station there are little cafes, massage parlours and Thai tea vendors selling authentic tea at a reasonable price. Most places were walkable. We used grab for two days, mostly for airport pickup and drop-off, and grab bikes and cabs arrived pretty quickly with little waiting. The rooms are small but have the facilities you need. We had two suitcases, so we emptied one and stored it on a shelf built above to save space. The staff were one of the best parts, always smiling and speaking very good English, which made getting around easier. On our last trip we stayed at Sova Hotel in Sukhumvit, expecting a lively area. It was lively, but far from the BTS and meant a 20 to 25 minute walk every day. For the way we travel, this location worked much better.
