Grand Living Place

It's a cheap option, and the owners are nice, but they barely speak English. They didn't provide basic things like toilet paper, a towel, or a microwave. The room looked nothing like the pictures on the site, and the building is old. The elevator seems poorly maintained, if it's serviced at all, and I kept worrying it might fail while I was in it. The emergency exits on the stairways were blocked, so there'd be no way out in a fire. I wouldn't stay here again.

For this price, you get a simple, no-frills room in a Thai-style apartment, with the shower and bathroom combined. It's spacious and very clean, with a big fridge, large closet, and a comfortable firm mattress. The building is well maintained, and it was surprisingly quiet at night. The location is convenient, under a 10-minute walk to MRT Sutisan, with convenience stores and tasty, cheap local food around the MRT station. The lovely staff are willing to go the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. Many local Thai office workers live here long term, so it doesn't feel overrun by tourists. I'll stay here next time I'm in Bangkok.

We booked two rooms at Grand Living Place through Agoda about 10 days ahead, for two nights starting 13 August 2016. We checked in around 1 p.m. on the 13th, and nobody asked for a deposit. Then at about 1:30 a.m. that night, someone from reception came in and started throwing our luggage out of the room. He handed me his phone and told us to listen to the caller, who threatened to call police and demanded immediate payment for both nights. This happened because Agoda cancelled our booking on 14 August, a day after we had checked in, without giving a reason. We asked Agoda for an explanation and said we'd decide what to do next about Agoda and the owners of Grand Living Place after receiving it. We recorded the incident on video as proof. It's a decent budget place. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the staff didn't speak English at all, so communication was difficult.
