New APG Apartment

From the outside, the apartment looks lovely. The rooms seem to have been renovated inside, but the air conditioners are very old and probably use more electricity. It’s also far from public transport, so having your own ride makes it okay.

The room was spacious, with a great view, a comfortable couch, and a new flat screen TV with cable. The bed was firm but comfortable. The air conditioner gets very cold and is a bit hard to adjust. The bathroom and shower felt fairly modern, with hot water. They also supplied two bottles of water, a fridge, a kettle, two coffee sachets, two cups, a small shampoo bottle, and liquid soap. At check-in, they ask for a 1000baht deposit and a few details on a one-page form, like your name and phone number. The place is very affordable and about a 10 minute walk from Phra Ram 9 MRT station. I’d absolutely recommend it. The downside is that there aren’t many places to eat within a 5 minute walk, so you have to go at least 10 minutes.

The apartment is tucked down a small soi, and Grab drivers can have a hard time finding it. It’s close to the MRT, Fortune Town, G tower, the shops and markets along Ratchadapisek, Sukhumvit, and the Skytrain. It’s also near a busy stretch of Thanon Din Daeng approaching Rama 9. I recommend walking through the sois north of the apartment, where there are lots of garment and textile shops, plus stores and street food serving the industrious local community. I stayed in a studio at New APG Apartment for 10 days. It was spacious, clean, and comfortable, with a very large but quite firm mattress, a great couch and sitting area, and a long balcony with views north and south. The women who run the place are friendly and helpful. It’s a real apartment building with residents, including young professionals, university students, and a handful of farang. There’s a small convenience store right next door, open all night, that sometimes makes and sells Thai snacks too. I’m giving it four stars because I think it’s a bit pricey. You do get a lot, and it’s like an apartment someone started before Airbnb existed, but for the price of this studio you could get an equally nice, probably nicer, totally private apartment on Airbnb.

The room was big, with lots of space, large windows, and a balcony. It was clean, but the internet was painfully slow for Bangkok and the hotel should update it. The evening front desk person didn’t speak English, and there wasn’t anyone at the desk 24 hours a day. They ask for a 1000bat deposit for the key, which is a card.
