Riverside Chiangkhan Resort

We really love this place, with its old charm and beautiful spot on the Mekong, which forms the border between Thailand and Laos. It was built more than a decade ago, and some rooms sit right above the river. The front desk clerk was very helpful on the phone and in person, and the service was unmatched. Our room had one king-size bed and one twin bed, and was comfortable, but the lack of nightstands made it hard to set down a phone, glasses, or other small things. The rooms could use some modernization while keeping that riverside charm. The bathroom layout feels dated and awkward, with the shower and toilet in one open space. Water sprays across the floor, so the bathroom gets wet whenever you shower. The freestanding sink is in the bedroom area with very little counter space for toiletries. A shower barrier and some nightstands would be simple, useful improvements. We liked the eggs at breakfast, but the other options, including rice soup, kapow, salad, powdered juice, and instant coffee, could be better. Better quality and taste would fit the hotel’s overall image. (Chef to upkeep with other restaurant) We’ll skip hotel breakfast tomorrow. These are honest comments from one customer, meant to help improve the experience, not put the hotel down.

We had a lovely floating room right on the river, with a direct view of Laos. There was a lot of luggage, and the staff kindly carried it all down for us.

The staff, especially the maintenance team, were really helpful, and the hotel has bicycles and a great bike lane for getting downtown. I highly recommend using them. My stay at Riverside Chiang Khan Hotel still left me with mixed feelings, though. We spent the first night in a new floating room on the Mekong, which was a stunning experience right on the water. But the walls were paper thin and the bathroom uncomfortable. The hotel was empty, yet they put the only two guests next to each other, which made it harder to rest. On the second night we moved upstairs. Those rooms had no insulation, and although it wasn’t especially noisy, heat poured in and the air conditioning barely worked.

The pontoon rooms are close to the river, and ours was clean and very well serviced over the 2 days we stayed. The location made it easy to walk or cycle to town or the viewpoint. There are plenty of stalls, though they all sold the same clothes, treats, or coconut shreds. Breakfast choices were limited, with white bread and instant coffee, but you could get eggs cooked how you wanted. Vegetarians and Italians are on the menu, but those options weren’t available during our visit in September 2025.
