The staff were the best part of my stay. Everyone was lovely, especially a member of the reception team who was welcoming and chatty. We spent a long time talking, and I really appreciated the many bottles of water in the rooms. The hotel itself disappointed me. It was dirty, with very cheap, uncomfortable furniture. The rooms had no windows that opened, which made me feel claustrophobic. The bathroom door barely counted as a door, so it wasn’t suitable for sharing a room if you want privacy. Breakfast was limited and cold, and the eggs were undercooked. The staff were lovely, but I wouldn’t return.

The staff made this stay memorable. They were warm and attentive every time, and after I proposed to my partner on his birthday, they surprised us with a beautifully decorated room with swans, balloons, cake, and flowers. Their excitement and kindness made our romantic trip unforgettable. They also went out of their way to check that a cheaper tour I found elsewhere was legitimate, so I wouldn’t get scammed. I really appreciated their honesty and care. Our room was spacious, with a soft bed, thorough daily cleaning, and a large bathtub with mountain views. We were on the fourth floor, though, and a power pole partly blocked the scenery. The tiny balcony gave us a good alternative. The decor is dated and could use a touch up, as is common in Asian 4-star hotels, so set your expectations accordingly. I thought it added some charm. Breakfast was good, if repetitive. It’s fine for a short stay, but for longer stays I’d explore local cafés. The hotel was a comfortable base in Chiang Mai, and the location was a bonus. The staff’s thoughtfulness is what earns it 5 stars.

The staff were kind and thoughtful throughout my pleasant stay at the Nimman Mai Hotel. I especially want to recognize the young Muslim woman, who was consistently warm, attentive, and smiling. Her hospitality stood out, and without the excellent service, my stay would probably have been closer to a 3-star experience. Breakfast was simple but reliably good, with enough variety for the mix of guests, and I was always happy with it. The hotel was clean and comfortable, though clearly aging. Updating the rooms, hallways, and dining areas would help; the property feels a little behind the times. I won’t list every detail because I don’t want to make it sound harsher than intended. My main complaint was the Wi-Fi. Whenever I left and came back, I had to log in again with my room number and password. Over a stay of a couple weeks, that became genuinely frustrating and easy to forget, which could burn through mobile data. I chose Nimman, though I prefer the Old City. It’s a more modern, trendy neighborhood with cafes, restaurants, and nightlife. There’s lots of good food around, including a delicious chicken spot down the road, a family-run restaurant to the north where all the Grab drivers eat, and markets and eateries from vegan food to wood-fired pizza. The convenient location and wonderful staff made this a positive stay. With some updating, the hotel has potential to be truly excellent.

The location and staff were the only things I found amazing. When we raised the problems, the staff did their best to accommodate us and arrange another room, but the timing didn’t work out. I wasn’t very hopeful about the alternative anyway. We left after two nights and received a partial refund of around 40%. I wanted to post this so people could see what our stay was like, rather than be misled by the 4.7 star rating. We booked 4 nights during this year's lantern festival, but the hotel was so bad that we would have left earlier if we’d found somewhere else. It was a busy period and nowhere else was available. The place needs a full renovation, though they chose to renovate the bar first. A few things we encountered: a musty, moldy smell in the room; black mold in the bathroom/toilet; yellow stains on the toilet seats; cheap fittings and hooks from Temu; thick dust on room fittings; and dirty slippers provided for comfort. New problems came up each night. The first night, the refrigerator dripped loudly all night, with constant drops and clicks. At breakfast the next morning, I felt like I was in prison, in a room without windows or light. The following day, the elevator broke on our floor, the 7th, and loud beeping woke us at 7am. If you stay here, at least the service and location are amazing. But if you want to come back to a clean, peaceful place to relax, this isn’t it. Dear owner, give your staff a raise and invest in the hotel.

The staff were really nice and welcoming, but they don’t own the hotel. The owners need to put money into a proper renovation of the rooms, instead of adding a bar. I booked expecting a pool and gym from the photos, but neither existed. I couldn’t relax and take life slowly in Nimman the way I’d hoped. The rooms in the photos are exaggerated, and the concept could work if they invested in proper furniture and lighting from the countries the rooms are themed after. Instead, the fittings look cheap and irrelevant, and the place looks cheap and dirty when you walk in. Once you’ve paid, it’s too late to fix that by complaining. They’ve tried to repair things rather than replace them, from the taps to the toilet seat. My toilet seat was held with a clearly visible rubber piece and didn’t function properly. The bathroom basin tap also leaked constantly, which was annoying.
