I’d gladly recommend Spice Garden based on what went well during my six nights there. The garden grounds are lovely, with lush plants and ponds where I could see the beautiful coi/carp fish from my room, 104 on the 2nd floor. My room had an attractive earth-tone look and plenty of space, including hidden closet storage and a shelf about 4 meters long across from the king-size bed and separate small sofa or “love seat.” I traveled alone, but a couple or small family would have room for their things too. The bathroom was beautifully designed, with a bidet nozzle and hose beside the toilet, plus a waterfall shower-head and marble floor and walls. The reception, restaurant, and café staff were warm, gracious, and welcoming. The location inside the Old City walls, near the Tha Phae eastern gate, made it ideal for my self-guided walking visits to temples (wat) on three days. There’s an attractive wat across the narrow lane from Spice Garden. For longer trips, Grab and Bolt drivers knew how to find the hotel and take me wherever I wanted. I only had one issue specific to my room, Room 104, which is almost directly over the reception desk on the ground floor. It’s near the pond water pump, and every so often the pump makes a soft, high-pitched sound, around 35 beeps before it goes quiet for a while. Ear-plugs muffled most of it at night for me, though other guests in that room might find it bothersome. There’s no lift to the second floor. You have to use a wide staircase, but the steps aren’t steep. At 71 years young, I had no trouble with the single flight since I packed light, with an airline carry-on size backpack and a small over-the-shoulder tote. I’d definitely consider staying here again on another Chiang Mai trip. It really is lovely.

Watch out for the drink offer. The sign said two drinks for 150 baht, but when the bill came, they said the discount only applied to other drinks listed on a different menu, which we hadn’t even received. We ended up paying 300 baht. Even after I pointed out that wasn’t the advertised price, they didn’t care. It felt unfair. First visit and last!

The staff were nice, but the management seemed too stingy to provide basic facilities. Breakfast had very few choices, and we were allowed to pick only one. There’s no lift, so we had to carry our luggage upstairs. There’s no intercom in the rooms either, which meant going down to reception whenever we needed anything. Only one person was at reception, responsible for the whole property.

Spice Garden and Aquarium Café has a striking setting: a leafy garden with flowers and small water features that feels calm and tucked away in the Old Town. The aquarium displays are an unusual touch, and it was fun to have coffee with colorful fish swimming nearby. The menu spans Thai and international food, with generous portions, appealing presentation, and plenty of flavor. The drinks were good too, from fruit shakes to smooth coffee, and the staff were attentive, friendly, and glad to suggest dishes. It’s a nice place to cool off, linger over a meal, or sit with a drink. Between the peaceful garden and the food, it’s a lovely café experience, whether you’re after lunch or a romantic dinner.

Our family really liked this hotel. It’s a peaceful spot in one of Chiang Mai’s busiest areas, with lots of restaurants nearby and easy access to other attractions. The garden downstairs is cozy and a lovely place to spend time. We’d choose the same hotel next time we visit ChiangMai!
