I’ve traveled for years and stayed in everything from basic places to high-end hotel chains in many countries, including Thailand. I’ve heard about towel scams around Hat Yai hotels, but this was my first time experiencing one myself. This is a basic hotel with a pool, a little far from the city centre. At checkout, several rooms, including mine, were suddenly accused of having dirty towels, and staff demanded payment for supposed damage. They couldn’t show evidence beyond their claims that the towel came from our room. A housekeeper had entered our room before checkout, which felt like a big red flag. Another was finding the towel on the floor instead of in the trolley during room cleaning. The hotel has a pool but no pool towels, which was a third red flag. Another group told me two of their rooms were affected. They said they had just used the towels before checkout, but the towels presented at the counter were dry. When they asked how that could be and whether those were the towels they’d used, staff ignored the questions and kept demanding payment. According to those guests, staff deducted the deposits for both rooms, more than the towel charges, without their approval. They claimed there were two dirty towels in my room. I immediately washed one with water in front of them, and the supposed dirt disappeared. They quickly kept the other towel under the counter so I couldn’t clean it, then wanted to fine me for it. What confused me was that the towels weren’t damaged or missing, just dirty, so why couldn’t they be washed? I wasn’t reluctant to pay because of the small towel fee. I couldn’t accept the hotel’s level of honesty or the way this seemed to target Malaysian guests. I called the police, and Thai police arrived within 20 minutes, three officers and one tourist police officer. They mentioned that towel and bedsheet damage cases had been happening fairly regularly in Hat Yai recently. After about ten minutes of discussion, the damage charge was surprisingly negotiated down by half. If the hotel was completely sure about its claim, why was the amount negotiable? I’m very disappointed the staff would use this tactic to get extra money from guests. It makes me wonder whether management is paying them properly. The hotel could do better, and I hope the owner takes note and improves things. Be careful if you stay here. At least take your towel to the counter at checkout and photograph your room to help avoid an unpleasant experience.

At checkout, the hotel said some towels were excessively soiled and demanded compensation. They couldn’t provide clear, verifiable evidence that the towels came from our room or that we had dirtied them. We carefully documented what happened and saw towels that appeared to have been put on the floor and made dirty before inspection. We also learned of other guests facing similar disputes. We asked the Tourist Police to mediate because the matter was serious. Even with official involvement, the hotel continued to insist on payment and held our deposit as leverage, pressuring us to pay instead of verifying the claim transparently. This raises concerns about fairness, accountability, hygiene management, professional ethics, and the treatment of guests. We urge the authorities overseeing hotels in Hat Yai to investigate these practices properly and impartially. Incidents like this undermine travelers’ confidence and may hurt Thailand’s reputation as a welcoming, trustworthy destination. Future guests should be cautious and make sure any room inspection at checkout is transparent.

When I checked out at 11:09 AM, I was told to pay 300 baht for a towel they said I had stained. But it wasn’t the towel I’d used. I was still swimming at 10:35 AM, then showered and used my towel again, so I clearly remember it was wet. How could the towel they showed me be completely dry by 11 AM? Four rooms were accused of the same thing that day, not just mine. The tourist police were called but weren’t much help. In the end, I paid half just to settle it quickly. I really didn’t want to pay for something I hadn’t done, but I wanted the situation over. I’ll never come back. Hospitality depends on integrity, and losing trust over a small amount of money leaves a worse stain than any towel mark.

We came as a group of more than 20, kids included, and everyone had a great stay. The service was top notch, with smiles everywhere. The rooms had lovely interiors, were clean and spacious, and each had direct access to the outdoor pool. The children’s pool was kid-friendly, and the adult pool was almost Olympic-sized, well, nearly. It’s on the outskirts of Hatyai, about 20 minutes away, which was acceptable for us.

We booked a Deluxe Family Room (Double bed & Bunk bed) and a Villa Superrior Room. We had a wonderful stay and would come back. It’ll be our first choice. The breakfast had a variety of options and tasted okay, though some things could be improved. The biggest issue was the language barrier. Some reception and restaurant staff need English courses to improve communication, as it was hard for both sides to understand each other. At first sight, we fell for the room. Opening the door, we got a nice perfume smell. It was clean and tidy, with a welcome drink, Smart TV that could play Netflix, dressing table, wardrobe cabinet, tiny fridge, and coffee table. The Deluxe Family Room opened onto a pool with a slide, while the Villa Superrior Room’s sliding door opened straight to the pool.
