I first booked at Tara because it used to be the only place in Kanch with good mattresses. The mattresses are still better than many others in Thailand, but the general standard has slipped a bit over the past years. Keep in mind what you’re paying: it’s not much, and you get a great location, a better bed than at most cheap places, and the sweetest people. If you want more, you have to pay more.

The spacious, comfortable rooms upstairs are highly recommended. Don’t be put off by the entrance looking like a private entry. Update 7.1.2025: Another wonderful stay. This time I chose the late train back to BKK, and annoyingly the last train leaves around 2:40 pm. I was very grateful that the team offered a late checkout. I didn’t expect it, and it was pleasing to have that loyalty go both ways. See you soon, team 😀

Update November 2022: I came back after staying here in 2016 and found that Tara B&B had sold most of the property to next door. It no longer had a pool and bar, just rooms, so I didn’t want to stay there after learning that. The pool now belongs to next door, Noble Night, but the vibe wasn’t nearly as good as when Tara owned it, and the price had tripled. The pool was dirty and nobody was around. The bar didn’t look like it was operating anymore 🥺. Such a shame, it was amazing before! Original review: I loved this place so much that I’m writing this four years later. I still often think about how peaceful I felt here. I was on a month-long trip around Thailand and meant to spread my time across the country, but I liked it so much that I stayed for two full weeks. Prices were very affordable and my bed was huge!!! The woman running the place was so sweet and polite. There was a lovely pool out back with loungers where people could relax, overlooking a river. I’ll come back one day.

The layout of the room was very nice and the location was great, but it was extremely noisy, like sleeping out on the street. There was a foul sewer smell, and it was the first time I’d stayed in such a stinky room. The bed was very soft and very uncomfortable. The ground floor has a laundry room, and the whole hallway smelled really bad, like rat droppings.

A pretty good stay in this well located guesthouse in the heart of Kanchanaburi. It’s excellent budget accommodation, clean, with nice staff, and everything worked well, including the internet. There are bars, a laundromat, and 7/11 nearby. The restaurant and pool shown in the pictures are gone, so it’s rooms only now. 👍
