The room was clean and the staff and people were very friendly, but I still wouldn't recommend staying here. My private room had no windows and felt like a prison cell. The hostel is deserted, so it's not a good place to meet people, and there isn't much going on nearby. It's far from the city centre, with ugly surroundings. The beach close by is dirty, rocky and unattractive, not somewhere you'd want to spend time.

There's everything nearby, and it's a nice place. The owner and workers are friendly. You can meet other travelers here and make plans together.
The bar downstairs had a nice evening buzz without being so loud that it kept me awake. The location was convenient too, close to the beach and with plenty of restaurants and little shops nearby. Staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful, sharing tips about beaches, activities and scooter rentals. I found the rooms clean and simple, with what I needed for a comfortable stay. The beds were comfortable and the air conditioning worked well, both especially valuable on Koh Chang. The whole hostel has a relaxed, friendly feel and makes it easy to meet other travelers. It's well run and great value for the money. I'd definitely come back to the 99 Hostel and Bar on Koh Chang.
