J4 Hotel Samui

The pool and beachfront facilities were lovely, and the location is handy, with everything a short walk away. I knew the room was budget/basic when I booked directly on the website about a month ahead, but the pool and beach were what sold me. The non-refurbished rooms are right on Chaweng's main strip, though, and the noise was the biggest letdown. I wanted a better night's sleep and would stay somewhere else next time. I had asked for a quieter room in the booking and told the hotel I was celebrating my birthday. At check-in they said ours was actually the worst room for noise and gave us earplugs each. After some back and forth, they moved us a few doors down to the same room type, but it was still noisy. Such a shame, as the hotel is otherwise great. I wish they'd address the noise with soundproofing or cut the room rate significantly. For what we paid, the quality of the stay didn't feel reasonable.

The beach was beautiful and the staff were very friendly. We asked for a quiet room, but got one overlooking an ugly concrete wall, with a ventilator in front of the balcony pumping out a strong restaurant-kitchen smell. Even so, music and party noise carried on until morning every day. The bed was only a little comfortable.

The path from J4 down to Chaweng beach is beautiful, and the location is excellent. The hotel was clean and well maintained throughout, with two pools and towels available for the beach or pool. We arrived early, and they were flexible about check-in, letting us know pretty quickly when the room was ready. I'd definitely stay again. J4 is part of the Chaweng Hotel, but smaller and better priced. Our room was spacious and smelled nice. The staff were super friendly and helpful. There's a small gym that worked well for us, costing only 100BAHT/day. Breakfast by the beach is 400BAHT per person, with a great range of food and fruit. It was stunning and worth the price. I loved Chaweng beach. The bed and pillows were a bit hard, but fine. The internet was sometimes slow, though I had unlimited data and didn't use much Wi-Fi. If you're very sensitive to noise, the street might bother you. I didn't hear the Arkbar sound some people mentioned.

The hotel is nice, close to everything, and has great shared beach facilities. It's a good pick if you want beach access and a little resort feel without paying too much. Our first room faced a wall of AC units. We were lucky to switch to another available room, but from the reviews, it seems like they give that room to a lot of guests and hope they'll accept it.
