Come for the nature and a bit of luxury, and think of it as visiting a faraway friend rather than checking into a hotel. Simon has built a wonderful place up on a remote hill, with rooms tucked into nature, a lovely garden and pool, and captivating stories to share.

The views are stunning, and the host is so friendly, always ready to offer advice or help with anything. Getting there means taking a bit of an off-road route, but it’s worth the effort if you’re after somewhere to unwind.

The tree house is a fun place to nap or read, with a full bedroom and hot shower downstairs. There’s also a pool waiting after a drive around the winding village roads, and two mischievous golden lab pups roaming the grounds. Tafelberg feels like a green escape from the dusty highways around Chiang Rai. The grounds are lush, and the open common area has an African lodge feel, with lovely views of the emerald mountains over morning coffee. I’d recommend stopping here whether you’re coming from chiang mai, chiang rai, or just passing through.

I ended up extending my whole Thailand trip after finding this area. Getting to the top of the northern mountain felt like a little adventure, with bamboo forest, tropical gardens, and tea hills all along the way instead of houses. I was surprised to find this magical place so far from everything, haha, but the owner can pick you up, or you can make the nice ride by motorbike. The people here are so kind, it really moved me.
