Afterglow hostel

The power was out during my stay, so I couldn't even charge my phones. The TV was broken and the fridge wasn't working either. There was no English information at the desk. I complained, but they said there'd be no refund or discount. This was a really unsatisfactory place to stay, the worst hotel I've experienced in Thailand. Don't stay here.

Cross the highway and wander down one of the little streets towards the mountains. The area is outrageously beautiful in daylight. There's also a small massage place tucked behind a hotel or resort across the highway. It isn't on Google Maps, and it's not the place beside the karaoke and pub. We come here when we need a night to rest before the long drive back to CM. It has a bit of the hip hostel feel I'd expect in Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai, but most, maybe all, of the rooms are private and they're great value. It's a nice, clean and cheap option for a border run, and a good spot for the area.

There are good places to eat nearby, though the cafe and restaurant weren't open. Get a room at the back if you can, since the road noise is unbearable otherwise. One little annoyance: the fridge outlet is controlled by the main room switch.

Affordable and nicely presented, with excellent staff and service. The place mixes a few styles: private cottages at the back, boutique rooms in the main building, and a café-style lobby lounge. It seems aimed mostly at young, hip Thai travelers. Mid-range, with a bit of everything.
