Khao Sok Cabana Resort

We spent three nights at Khao Sok Cabana Resort. At first, things seemed good: the room was clean and comfortable, and the staff appeared friendly and professional. On our third day, we had a half-day trip booked to Cheow Lan Lake. Since it involved a longtail boat ride, kayaking, and swimming, we deliberately hid all our valuables among our clothes in the room, out of sight. We also put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door. Staff told us there would be a power cut from 9 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon. In good faith, we let them know we’d be out for the day so they wouldn’t have to worry about the inconvenience. We left around 1 in the afternoon and got back at about 7 in the evening. When I took out our money belt to get ready for dinner, I found that the 8,000 Thai baht inside, all in 1,000 baht notes, had been replaced with 100 baht notes. Around 7,000 baht was missing, with only 1,000 baht left, which looked like an attempt to cover it up. We reported it calmly to reception that evening. The staff member on duty seemed genuinely surprised and concerned. I asked if they could check CCTV, especially as there was a camera directly facing our room and the Do Not Disturb sign had been up. The scheduled power cut and our absence seemed to have created an opportunity for someone to enter without being noticed. We had no concrete proof, so we chose not to involve the police. Instead, we asked to speak with the manager, hoping for a responsible response such as partial compensation or at least a serious investigation. Management’s response was deeply disappointing. On the phone, the manager repeatedly dismissed what had happened and said that nobody would enter a room with a Do Not Disturb sign. That missed the point, and there was no empathy, accountability, or effort to investigate. We know everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and we didn’t accuse any particular person. Still, management’s lack of concern, responsibility, and professionalism left us feeling unsafe and unheard. If this had been handled with transparency and empathy, I probably wouldn’t be writing this review. Travelers should feel secure in their accommodation, and we didn’t. Stay safe.

We liked the cozy houses tucked among all the greenery, and the vibe was lovely. The staff were super nice. The rooms are simple and breakfast was okay, pretty average.

The natural setting is magical, right in the jungle, and at sunset I saw more than 50 monkeys. Though it’s a little way from the village, it’s walkable. They also kindly stored our luggage after checkout while we went to an activity. Still, I’m giving two stars instead of one because of the beautiful surroundings. The cabins are in very poor condition and weren’t properly cleaned. The sheets were clean, but that seemed to be all that had been cleaned. The floor was sticky, and the bathroom had ants and other insects. There are no mosquito nets, and the mattresses feel like metal. The cabins are joined by wooden walkways that look charming, but when it rains, as it often does, they’re as slippery as ice. There are no handrails or anti-slip surfaces. I’ve heard there have already been accidents, but nothing has been done to prevent them. After breakfast, I paid a staff member, who kept the money for herself. Later we were asked to pay again. We said we’d already paid, and when they asked her about it, she confessed. I’m not sure what they discussed internally. The facilities are in very poor condition.

It’s close to the main national park entrance and the village. The room is basic, but big enough for two, and the bathroom is very basic too, so don’t expect much. The staff are friendly, and cleanliness was fine. The balcony chairs were very dirty and the sunbeds had seen better days. We found a massive cockroach in the bathroom on our first night. You’re in the middle of a national park, so it wasn’t unexpected, but it still didn’t put us at ease.
