The next day, the same receptionist made me an access card in about 10 seconds. The night before, I’d locked myself out of my Airbnb, and even though the host had approved a new card, she kept telling me to contact the owner. I already had, and when I tried translating because I thought she hadn’t understood, she got offended. The owner later contacted her and told me the person who could help had gone home, so I should return at 10am. I had to spend that night at another Airbnb. When I asked why she hadn’t made the card the previous evening, she said the computer wouldn’t do it after 6pm. That seemed like a lie. She could have explained that instead of repeating “contact the owner.” She’d seen me coming and going from the apartment all day, so I wasn’t some random person. The whole thing felt personal and completely insane.
