River Kwai Jungle Rafts

The staff were so welcoming, and the breakfast was tasty. Our bedroom was clean and comfortable, too. Each morning you can feed the elephant pineapple, and one of the waiters teaches at the Mon village school just over the footbridge. He knows a lot about Mon culture. The River Kwai Jungle Rafts felt magical from the start. We were floating on the historic river, surrounded by thick jungle and the sounds of nature, and relaxing in a hammock watching the water go by was pure bliss. It was an incredible stay unlike anything we’d experienced before. If you’re after modern amenities and luxury, this might not suit you, but for a peaceful, unusual stay you’ll remember, it’s a special place.

We booked a two day trip through the Lancaster Bangkok, where our friends were staying, and spent part of it here. They told us upfront there was no electricity, so there’s no aircon, but mosquito nets and a hand fan were provided. It’s simple, but such a cool and unique experience. Pat, our host and guide, couldn’t have been kinder. You can also visit the village right beside the hotel. A great option if you want something different.

The setting is lovely, the surroundings are beautiful, the staff are friendly, and the food was good. There’s Wi-Fi at reception, and you can charge your phone there too. We enjoyed the stay until checkout. The biggest reason for my low rating is the transport cost. We paid 4500 baht for two people to get back from the floating hotel. A local taxi at the pier told us he’d have taken us to Bangkok for 2700 baht, and could have driven us right away. The hotel’s transport felt overpriced, and it spoiled an otherwise good experience. Getting there, we used Grab from Bangkok and paid 2200 baht. Grab wasn’t available for the return because the hotel is outside its service area. Reception said she could only arrange the hotel’s own car. At the pier, that transport wasn’t ready, so we waited another 30 minutes or more. We’d also been told the day before that boats went every hour and agreed on a time, but at checkout we waited 30 minutes past it for another guest. There’s also a lot of outside noise, and sound travels between rooms because they’re open at the ceiling. If you’re a light sleeper, you may wake around 6am when people start walking past. Boats passed more often than once an hour and disrupted the peaceful feel, though maybe that’s to be expected. If you go, arrange your return with a local taxi. I’d put the hotel car service down to the prices.

The floating rooms sit in a stunning spot among the river and lush jungle, and there’s no electricity or Wi-Fi. Dinner was excellent. What made the trip especially moving was our guide, Pat. After we visited the Bridge on the River Kwai, the museum and Hellfire Pass, Pat came with us to the Jungle Rafts and explained things clearly along the way. He’d already had a long day and had several roles to handle, but his energy was contagious. He loves dancing, and his enthusiasm made the Mon evening dance feel like a real moment of shared joy, not a tourist show. Pat is only 23, but so warm and engaging. As a Mon person himself, he gave us a personal look at the culture and history of his village during the tour, which stayed with us.
