Ban Nam Mao Resort

The room smelled bad at first, though leaving the balcony door open for a few days helped. The old bedroom furniture looks like it dates back to when the hotel was built, and it compares poorly with other places in the area at a similar price. This place may have been nice when it was built last century, but it badly needs renovation, refurbishment, or at least a proper clean. Getting to the beach and a lively little stretch of restaurants and massage shops is convenient. The hotel itself sits on a dark side street with lots of feral soi dogs, and some seem to live on the property. If dogs make you uncomfortable, you may want to skip it. The general feel was like a nursing home for poor foreigners. I was 63 when I wrote this, yet felt like a teenager among the other guests. Around midnight one evening, two men burst into my room. I thought I was about to be robbed. It turned out to be one of the owners with a drunk German guest, who had apparently told the owner that my room was his. I asked reception about it the next day. Opening a guest's room without first checking who is staying there was shocking. Nothing like that has happened to me before. The policy on blood stains on the bedding is outrageous. I was charged 1000 Baht / 30 USD for a thumbprint-sized stain, then 1700 Baht for a small mark on the bedclothes and a very small one on the pillowcase. I'd cover replacement costs if I'd permanently damaged the bedding, but charging that much to remove small stains from old sheets is disgraceful. I dread to think what would happen if a woman had a problem during her menstrual period. There are also a ridiculous number of rules and penalties posted all over the hotel. They call this a resort, but to me it's just a hotel with a pool, restaurant, and bar, with no other services. The only reason I'd stay again is if every hotel within a 100 km radius were full, and even then I'd be very wary.
