The one bright spot was the evening staff, who were extremely helpful. The tuk tuk shuttle was also useful, with free rides to certain places during the day and paid trips elsewhere, charged per ride and direction. Night fares apply too, and can sometimes be the biggest expense of the day. Beyond that, this feels like a place to sleep for one night and leave early. I wouldn’t recommend it for families. The room was extremely poor, and breakfast was a letdown: flies and insects were helping themselves alongside guests, and the selection was both disappointing and outrageously priced.

It was quiet there, which I liked, though getting around on foot wasn’t easy. The hotel has a taxi service to different areas, and the pool and service were nice. Rooms were spacious and the facilities clean, with helpful staff. I skipped breakfast because it looked limited and didn’t appeal to me, though plenty of other guests seemed to enjoy it.

For two of my five nights in mid-March, a local “VIP” took over the whole ground floor for what seemed to be a birthday party. From what I could gather, he was the chief of the local national park, though communication in English was difficult. There were dozens of guests, a private DJ, and loud, pounding music. He didn’t seem to care that hotel guests were staying there, and it was unbearable. I complained, but the hotel said there was nothing they could do. They didn’t offer a refund for those two nights or anything else. The stay might have been okay otherwise.

Friendly Hotel really lives up to its name. The staff were very nice, and the place was comfortable and clean, with a nice pool. It was perfect for what I needed at Port Takola.
