Avlu Tophane

Our room was dark, with no window facing the street, and on the ground floor the door and window opened right onto the coffee shop’s ten tables. We could hear everything happening there. The hotel is centrally located, on a slope and close to most places. We booked after reading the positive reviews, but left dissatisfied. In Turkey, it seems wise to be cautious when choosing a hotel because owners may have friends write favorable reviews. I’m not saying that happened here, but the stay didn’t work for us.

The owners made us feel like family, and the food from the kitchen was delicious. Our room was spacious, cool through the day, and had fast wifi; the beds were comfortable too. The courtyard has the peaceful feel of a country villa, despite being just off a quiet street. It’s beside a small grocery store, major transport routes, and one of the Ottoman Empire’s most historic sites. A short walk away there’s also a fantastic panoramic view of the city. I was here for work in summer and would love to return with friends in winter. The stay was so good that I plan to choose this place whenever I’m back in Bursa, and I can’t recommend it enough.

We got in late, but the hosts still went out of their way to help arrange our airport trip for the next day. Both were warm, friendly, and helpful. The historic building has lovely architecture and an intimate courtyard where breakfast, tea, and cookies are served. Our room was clean, spacious, pleasant, and furnished in a modern style.

We stayed three nights and would gladly have stayed longer. The hospitality was wonderful, and we felt at home and relaxed. The owner was the friendliest person we’ve ever met, and her daughters were lovely too. It’s a family hotel in an Ottoman house, with modern rooms. The family room gave us the whole floor: a large living room, a huge bedroom, a long hallway, and a big couch. Everything, including the roomy bathroom, was very clean. Whenever we needed anything, it was sorted out right away. Breakfast is a simple, good buffet, enough to start the day, and the owner will make something extra if you ask. Her homemade bread was delicious. There’s also a small garden with a few tables, a peaceful place in the middle of the city. A few local visitors come for a drink and to relax, but it never felt crowded, noisy, or disruptive. We loved the calm there. The location is ideal for a city trip or a longer stay. The bazaar and Tophane are a one-minute walk away, and Ulu cami is five minutes away. Street parking is free and we found a spot without much trouble. I called an hour before check-in and luckily a room was available; the owner’s daughter even ran out to greet me and help with parking. We were two adults and two children, and the stay was perfect.
