Shelby Hotel

Mr. Alperen was smiling and helpful when I arrived at the hotel, and he’d already welcomed me warmly during our phone call. The whole team deserves thanks. The location is lovely and convenient, the beds were good, and everything was clean. The bathroom was fine too. It’s comfortable, quality accommodation for business travelers. I had a positive experience, though you’ll have to decide for yourself.

The hotel was clean and the services were very good. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Hazal and Alperen at reception were especially welcoming and warm, and Nimet at the restaurant was so nice and generous.

For work at Erciyes University, the hotel is in a very convenient spot. It’s right beside the campus and you can walk there, either along the highway side or by taking the small road into campus. A friend told me the building was originally built as a student center, which may explain why the rooms don’t have the usual hotel proportions. Still, the place is quite decent, especially for its affordable price. Communication was a challenge. The hotel staff can hardly be said to speak English, so we had to use a translation app like Google Translate. The instructions are also mostly in Turkish. Breakfast works differently from other hotels: instead of setting food out in one area, they bring a food package to each table, sized according to the number of guests. There are also two cafes and a family restaurant nearby, so finding food at night isn’t a problem, though the uphill road makes getting there rather difficult.

We didn’t get into the room until late at night, and we were so exhausted and uncomfortable that we couldn’t even change our clothes. It was below freezing inside. I switched on the heater right away, but the room didn’t reach a normal temperature until around 5:30 am. The towels had fallen on the bathroom floor and were dirty. I asked reception the next morning to replace them, and they wrote it down, but nobody followed up. When I called again in the evening, they left the line open while dealing with new arrivals, so I could hear what was going on. At reception, I asked why they hadn’t answered the phone and was told, "I was checking in customers." Were we not customers too? I was completely dissatisfied. Especially if they assign room number 1011, absolutely don’t accept it.
