Akerdem Hotel

The location is the one good thing here. The rooms are nothing special, but at least they do the job. I wouldn't recommend this hotel: the owners were dreadful, the breakfast was bad, and the Wi-Fi was trash. I had to fix the router on our floor just so my girlfriend, I, and guests upstairs could get any internet. Housekeeping was poor too. They didn't change the sheets, and you had to keep asking for toilet paper because they wouldn't replenish everyday supplies on their own. My girlfriend and I accidentally left clothes in the wardrobe. Some friends arrived at the hotel right after us and checked, but couldn't find them. When they asked a room cleaner, she said she hadn't seen them either. All in all, I'd avoid this hotel if you can.

We found the place online at an affordable rate, around 550 tl for a double room, and liked it enough to extend our stay by ten days so we could rest in the city. The room was small but very clean, with A/C, warm water, a desk, and storage. The furnishings may look old to some, but we thought they suited the character of the building and were good quality. Our balcony looked out over the street, a nice spot to read or eat. People in nearby buildings also sat on their balconies at mealtimes, watching the street activity. There was a shared rooftop pool where we spent many evenings watching the sunset, with a lovely view from up there. The hotel sits at the edge of the main town, within walking distance of the coast, restaurants, bars, and bazaars. The staff were friendly and helpful, and some spoke excellent English. During our ten days, the room wasn't attended unless we arranged cleaning, asked for consumables, or left rubbish outside the door. We noticed the Google Maps price shifted quite a lot from day to day. At the 550 tl per night we paid, it was excellent value. I'd have different expectations if it cost closer to 1,000 tl, and this review might not hold true at that price.

Akerdem is right in the city center, and I'd recommend it to budget travelers, young people, or anyone looking for an average place to stay. The rooms were clean, neat, and comfortable, and there was hot water in the bathroom. The air conditioning worked just about fine, though you have to pay extra for it. I'd heard from several friends about the hotel, and it matched what I expected. The staff were polite and willing to help when something went wrong, like the room key failing to turn on the electricity. I'm quite satisfied with the stay.

What a disappointment. The internet, lights, and sockets didn't work. Bugs and other insects got in because there were no nets, and once the window was closed, we couldn't open it again. The bathroom had leaks from the sink, toilet, and ceiling. Even when you pay for the air conditioner, it might not cool properly. In ten days, we got one roll of toilet paper, not counting the used roll that was already there. Breakfast was the same every morning: margarine, cream, cream cheese, honey, and just a little cucumber or tomato. Sometimes there was something edible like a boiled egg, but don't count on it. A pretty miserable stay.
