Lunch and dinner were good, and breakfast had a pretty decent spread. The staff put in a lot of effort to give good service, which lifts the hotel above what feels like a three star standard. My room, though, had an odd problem with the lights. A loud click woke me, and by morning none of them worked. Reception came up right away, moved a painting to get to the fuse box, and found some switches had tripped. It gave me the impression this had happened before. I was there in the last few days of April, when it was 26 degrees and hot for me. The room had been in the sun all day, and stayed hot. I asked twice whether the air conditioning was on and working, and was told it was. My guess was that it was still set to heating because the winter to summer changeover hadn't been done. Turkey had been much colder just a few days earlier, but nobody explained what was going on. I hope my guess is right, because summer would be unbearable without working air conditioning. There was also a flashing light every minute or so while I was trying to sleep. It was annoying enough that I covered my eyes with a flannel from the bathroom. That helped me drift off, though the flashing was noticeable when I woke in the night. I assume it was a fire detector, but surely it doesn't need to flash. The barman also misunderstood my request for a large bottle of water and brought a small one. My English is okay, but there was some confusion. Later I wondered if perhaps they were offering water free from large bottles, though that was only a guess.

We’ve stayed here twice, and on our second visit asked for the same first-floor room because we liked it so much. The rooms are spacious, cozy and spotless, with tea and coffee available to make in the room. After a tiring day of hiking, we came back hungry and exhausted to a lovely platter of fresh fruit and nuts. That welcome really touched us. The reception team is a big part of what makes the place special. They’re warm, smiling and patient, and always happy to help with questions. The hotel itself brings historic architecture together with modern comforts, while still respecting its centuries of history. It’s right in the old part of Tarsus, within easy walking distance of the historic sights. Just keep in mind that it’s a protected historic area, so don’t expect a modern multi-storey car park. The authentic setting is part of the charm. Breakfast was served both as a buffet and as a plated meal during our stays. It might work better to give guests a list of what’s available, perhaps a digital form since there’s wifi, so they can choose what they want and less food gets wasted. Not everyone eats Nutella or some of the other items. Asking guests to choose six things, with extras available for a charge, could be fair. Tarsus stole my heart, and this hotel is an important part of that. We can’t recommend it enough.

The rooms look beautiful, the hotel is nice, and the products they use are clearly high quality. The price is reasonable too. But wood dust kept dropping from the ceiling onto the bed, and the floor hadn’t been cleaned well. There was a bad smell from the bathroom the whole time, plus another odor coming in from outside, apparently city pollution from old winter stoves. That feels very unhealthy. The shower area isn’t enclosed, so water spreads across the whole bathroom floor.

The rooms are lovely, and it’s a beautiful hotel in a great spot for exploring the old city. The air conditioning wasn’t working, though, and the staff felt unfriendly. They could use a lesson in smiling.

A flight cancellation left me scrambling with my travel plans, so I booked this hotel at the last minute. The team went out of their way to help me through all the difficulties, and I’m very grateful to them and the manager. The hotel is beautiful, the room was comfortable, and I slept like a queen. Great value for money, and I highly recommend it. 🙏
