Golden Thistle Hotel

The pool was closed, and the room needs repairs before I’d recommend staying here. The toilet kept spinning and wouldn’t flush. Inside, it felt like stepping back to 1965: the countertop was peeling, the refrigerator shelves were rusty, and there were only two electrical outlets, one for the TV and cable box and the other in the kitchenette for the fridge.

After a long wait, we finally got into our room at midnight, about four hours after arriving. There were two infants with us, and we had to wait outside in the night dew because the lobby was too small for all the families. Several groups were already waiting, tired and irritated, and three more families arrived after us. The receptionist had a bad attitude while helping people. We were told the maintenance person hadn’t cleaned any rooms, so the receptionist and “manager” had to clean them and check each item off a list before guests could enter. Even when we told the “manager” how poor the service was, he seemed even more annoyed than the families and walked away. They’d called that morning to remind us of our booking, but hadn’t checked whether our rooms were ready. We’d traveled from Trinidad to Tobago by ferry and even called to say the boat was running late. This was a terrible experience, and we’ll never return. I wouldn’t recommend the hotel because of the poor service.

Housekeeping was good, and my stay was good overall. The place was clean and quiet. Still, the amenities need updating, and the pool and customer service need attention. I also waited far too long at the service desk before anyone came to help.

The pool was disgusting. The tiles around it and above the waterline were brownish and slimy. The bed was awful too, I could feel the wood or iron through the sponge when sitting or lying down. The refrigerator gave me a shock whenever I opened or closed it, so don’t touch it. The AC worked only sometimes, the shower was barely more than a slow sprinkle, and making rice on the stove took almost two hours because it was so weak. Mr Michael said everything worked, but I can’t win on how well. Worst hotel ever. Spend a little more somewhere else and you’ll be happier and more comfortable.
