Tsun Huang Hotel

I stayed here in 2023 and came across the hotel again while booking my next trip, so I wanted to warn other travelers. One morning, my partner woke up coughing and choking from secondhand smoke. She has respiratory problems, and the smoke came through the shared ventilation from the connecting room, via the bathroom. Our mouths tasted like ashtrays, and it put a horrible note on our holiday visiting family. When I told reception, they brushed it off with “so...?” and downplayed what had happened. I was angry, and my partner was upset by the hospitality and how they handled it. I asked to speak with the hotel manager because the reception staff seemed incompetent. We waited over an hour for him. When he arrived, he was very apologetic, and I was able to cancel the bookings for the following nights and get a refund for those nights. I also asked for at least a refund for the night we were breathing toxic secondhand smoke, since the hospitality was far below what anyone would expect. Unfortunately, I didn't get that night's payment back. It was a horrible situation, handled even worse, and the breakfast was just as depressing as that night. Maybe their service has improved, but I'm not staying again, and I'll tell friends and family to steer clear.

The beds could have been softer, though that's probably personal preference, and hallway noise carries easily into the rooms. Even so, we felt the hotel was good value and would recommend it, despite being a little farther from the busy parts of Chiayi City. We stayed during the Moon Festival, and the staff clearly put effort into making it a good visit. They helped guests arrange taxis, and there was a barbecue and complimentary drinks for guests at the lobby entrance. The rooftop pool is a great addition for families, with a nearby bar serving alcoholic drinks.

The rooms are spacious, clean, and have comfortable beds and nice bathrooms. Breakfast was a delicious buffet, and the location is handy, with a bus stop nearby. Good service and good rates, too.

The main drawback was the room's sound insulation, which could be better. Still, we had a good experience choosing this hotel. The price was reasonable for a family stay, and the pool was beautiful and clean. Breakfast was hearty, with some local snacks. Our room wasn't very big, but it was clean, had good air conditioning, and felt comfortable.
