At NT$1200 a night, the room was very basic. The safe shown in the picture wouldn't open, and the TV image was so rough it made me wonder if I'd gone back 20 years. There was practically no soundproofing, so I could hear other guests all night. Am I being too generous giving the room four stars?

The room smelled awful, and this was one of the dirtiest places I've ever seen. Staying here felt like a health hazard. The place should be shut down.

The room they gave us was quiet, and the hotel is only a few steps from Heart of Hsinchu Gate, right beside a supermarket. A friendly woman at reception shared stories and recommendations I enjoyed hearing. They also arranged bicycle parking, and we weren't the only cyclists. The decor is old, but everything is branded, including the tub and Japanese-style toilet. I would return, though the morning interaction over coffee was unnecessary. At check-in nobody told us that glass cups were only for guests paying for breakfast, and we'd already helped ourselves. The man at reception called across the room to tell us off loudly.

The location is great, and the staff are extremely friendly. It's an old-fashioned style hotel, but I'd definitely stay again on our next trip here.
