The Leaf Inn

If alternative style isn't your thing, this may not be the hotel for you. The exterior looks so rough, and the name is hard to see, that it’s easy to wonder if you’ve found the right place. Inside is quirky, with art, mixed furniture, an old motorbike and car, and even a rabbit. There's an overhead projector instead of a TV, concrete floors instead of carpet, and a clothes rack rather than a cabinet. Breakfast is a set option, but it’s good, and the friendly reception staff serve it. The center is a bit far, though you can borrow a bike for the 15 minute ride. Parking is a plus, with plenty next door and along the curb.

The rooms have a designer look, and if you find the hotel room on sale, I think it’s worth it for a night. It’s a little off the path, and the couch for watching TV was uncomfortable. There was nowhere to set toiletries by the sink or put luggage, I guess art people don't have any luggage. The staff seemed a bit pretentious to me. Breakfast was small, with processed cheese and bread.

For the price, the atmosphere was decent throughout and the stay was satisfying. One issue was that the room rate was quoted incorrectly at first. When I called back to book, I was told it should be NTD 400 more. I chose the top floor, the 3rd floor, after being told it had a much better ocean view, but you can hardly see the ocean.

Behind the leaf in entryway is a coffee shop that's worth finding. It used to be some kind of factory and is now a large but cozy art space and coffee lounge. The menu is small, and the prices are very reasonable, especially for Hualien. I liked the reused-materials decor, stylish without feeling pretentious. A lovely hidden spot, suitable for a small intimate gathering or even a big crowd.
