The owner and staff were easy to talk to and very helpful, and they carefully made tasty local breakfasts. The meat dumplings, egg pancakes, and coffee with milk were all great. Bathrooms were plentiful, so we didn't have to share, and the big dining table and kitchen gave our friends room to eat, drink, and chat in the evening. We came for a road race with friends. The place is close to the World Games, parking was convenient, and there are good cafes and restaurants nearby. The building has a strong Japanese architectural feel and lots of photo spots, plus space for chess, table tennis, or watching TV. Our room was comfortable, though a little more lighting would help since it felt dim. A fantastic, high-quality guesthouse.

Comfortable, peaceful, and elegant accommodation. I'd definitely give it a try!

We finally stayed at the well-known Military Hostel B&B in Jianye New Village, Zuoying Navy Village. Ever since Randy took me to see the village's B&Bs and restaurants, I'd wanted to spend a night there. Our four-person room was $4,300 with breakfast included. The B&B joins two houses. One has two bedrooms for up to eight people, along with a Jenga area, living room, dining room, and kitchen. The other sleeps 12 and has a Japanese-style living room, billiards, and the signature bathtub. Staff were excellent and friendly, and breakfast the next morning was a delicious Zuoying spread that I ate while working before heading out for the day. There were a few flaws, but they were acceptable and I still give it five stars. The old house doesn't block sound well, so I worried my family might bother the neighbors. It was also quite humid, probably because of the constant typhoon rain, and the pillows felt a little too soft for me. Watch out for mosquitoes in the military village at night. I got bitten while walking there and ended up with several big welts.

The courtyard greenery made breakfast especially nice, and I had a wonderfully relaxing long soak in the big tub in the spacious bathroom. Inside, the Taiwanese and Japanese styles blended together in a way that reminded me of my grandmother's house and made me feel at ease. I've lived in Taiwan for five years, but this was my first stay in a military dependents' village. It was clean and close to the High-Speed Rail station. There were quite a few mosquitoes, though they provided plenty of repellent, which I was glad to use. I was very happy with the experience. Thank you!

We'd read lots of reviews before choosing this unusual guesthouse. The living room is huge and has a homey feel, with room for families or groups to watch TV and talk. Even though we arrived very late, a staff member opened the door, showed us around, and then we were left to rest. There wasn't a front desk attendant, which was a first for me, and it made for a pretty unique stay. That night we were the only two guests, and since we didn't know the area, we felt a little nervous. Our room had no toilet, so we had to go out to the shared one. It was a bit scary. I wondered why they couldn't put us in a room with a toilet when we were the only guests. There was no TV in the room either, only in the living room. My travel companion was too frightened to go out to the toilet overnight and held it until dawn. Maybe Kaohsiung is safer than we thought, but that was still unsettling.
