Purple Garden Motel

There’s no elevator, so getting upstairs could be tough if stairs are a problem. The stairs to the room are also narrow, which might be awkward if you have big feet. The grounds are lovely, with lots of flowers and trees, and the staff at entry and exit were polite. For $2,700 a night, the room was very nice, with a master bathroom, separate shower, sauna, a small hot tub for two, and a comfortable sitting area with a sofa, two easy chairs, and a very nice-sized table. There’s parking on the first floor. Free breakfast is Chinese style, with kanji and different toppings, plus white bread, fried eggs, traditional Taiwanese pink ham, coffee, and juice. You can eat in the little third-floor restaurant or take the food back to your room. The Wi-Fi didn’t work. When we called the desk, they sent a technician who blamed the high net, but nobody tried to fix it or offered a partial refund. We had booked two nights, and they told us we would have to check out or switch rooms if we kept complaining about the Wi-Fi. Since the hotel says it provides Wi-Fi, it should make sure it works for guests. We moved to another room, but it had a nasty sex chair that I’d deliberately avoided by booking the first room. The desk clerk gave us a 200 discount on the second night, but nothing off the first room, where we had no Wi-Fi at all.

For the price during Chinese New Year, it was quite good. The room itself was decent, and although the hallway looked dated, it was maintained. Surprisingly, even though none of the rooms were non-smoking, I didn’t notice any smoke smell. The soundproofing was poor, though: there were odd noises, and in the morning I could hear people talking outside. The bathroom had no separate wet and dry area, so be careful not to slip. Its TV was basically broken and unusable. Breakfast was mostly Chinese congee with few choices, and the toast was very ordinary.
