Adagio Jinguashi

We had one of our best stays in Taiwan here. It’s a little tricky to reach, but driving to the parking spot just east of the place on Google Maps worked for us. We were welcomed with attentive butler service and a drink and snack while the room was getting ready. Guests can choose the music and fragrance in the room, which was a nice touch. Everything felt clean, with a slightly wabi-sabi look. There’s a reading area with free tea, and a pantry where you can make cup noodles and pay on an honesty basis. The rooftop open space has incredible views. Our room was spacious and clean, with a lovely forest view, and the Japanese-style heated toilet bowl was amazing. I’d recommend it to people driving around New Taipei and staying overnight.

Every detail felt considered, and the butler was thoughtful. We even joined a guided night walk since the weather was good. It’s a lovely slow-living experience, with service more interesting and attentive than I’d expect even at a five-star hotel. Just keep in mind it won’t suit children, noisy guests, or elderly people who have trouble getting around.

Tucked away in a valley, it’s a nice spot to relax, with a clean, cozy room and light food that tasted decent. The main issue for me was the old-style centralized ventilation. It was noisy enough to affect my sleep, but turning it off would have made the room too hot.

Adagio gives the stay a thoughtful feel, with small comforting touches and stories along the way. There’s a welcoming incense house at check-in and a history tour with an 8-course dinner. It’s a nice way for individuals or couples to experience Taiwan’s "artsy, literary" feel in the heart of the Jinguashi mountains, surrounded by nature and away from city bustle. Families with kids may find the many steps and lack of elevators difficult. The rooms aren’t very soundproof either, so if an infant or toddler is finding their voice, you might feel awkward knowing other guests can hear.
