I was new to Taiwan and Jiufen, and as a woman traveling alone, I stayed for two nights. Jiufen mostly has B&Bs rather than hotels, so it may not suit fussy travelers. Way Young House B&B was peaceful and felt safe, tucked away along some steps but barely a five-minute walk from Jiufen Old Street. The owner was kind and very helpful, with lots of suggestions for things to do nearby. He made sure I had what I needed for a good stay. Breakfast was included each day and delicious. I'd highly recommend it!

The soft beds and the host's kindness were positives, and the place is close to Jiufen Old street. But our room had no window, smelled bad, and had mold in the bathroom and on some pillows. There was no hand soap, and the shower curtain was so short that the bathroom stayed wet. People sensitive to smells should know the main hallway has a strong incense smell and an idol. There were lots of bugs too. With no chairs in our room, we had nowhere to sit. Breakfast was brought to the room, so unless the weather was nice, eating meant sitting on the floor. We could use the water dispenser and small fridge, which was handy. A bright exit sign in the room might bother anyone sensitive to light while sleeping. The water pressure was a bit low, and hot water took a while. Parking only became free after 6 pm, so arriving at 4 cost us 100 NT.

Kevin was an easy person to chat with, and we're glad we stayed at his place in Jiufen. On our second day, it rained without stopping, so he kindly let us extend our stay. The common room has cats: after I settled in, a friendly ginger climbed onto my lap and made itself at home. There are mosquitoes around too. We arrived late on check-in day after a string of mishaps, starting with missing Taipei's last bus. Kevin stayed up to welcome us, show us the room, and share the latest typhoon forecast for Jiufen and what we might expect in the days ahead. Typhoon Krathon was still out at sea, with Taiwan in its path. Our Deluxe Double had a bay view and plenty of space, with a comfortable bed, table, and seats. The air conditioning, Wifi, water heater, and TV all worked well, with lots of channels and great water pressure. It would be better if the outlets were closer to the bed. Somehow, a few little insects got in despite the closed windows and doors. The room had a hair dryer and hangers, there was a useful humidifier in the corridor, and downstairs we could use a hot and cold water dispenser and a fridge. Kevin hung breakfast outside our door each morning. The first day's bread and soy drink looked simple but tasted terrific. Because of the typhoon, on the following days it was packaged bread from Family Mart. I spent some time watching anime on my iPad in the common area. I'd happily return to stay with Kevin when the skies are brighter.
