I hadn't planned on going to Sanyi, but Taichung and Puli were ridiculously expensive that weekend, so I gave it a try. Glad I did. It's a clean, nice hostel, and the owner was friendly and helpful. Worth stopping here, and you can hike Huoyanshan mountain.
I spent two nights here starting January 16, 2026, in a bunk bed double suite. It was a comfortable place to sleep, and although the bed itself was a simple wooden bunk, the bedding was soft, clean, and pleasant. The room and surroundings were elegant, tidy, and clean. One thing I missed was somewhere to hang clothes. There were only two black plastic hangers, so I went out and bought more. If the structure can't be changed, maybe a movable clothes rack and a few hangers could be added. I included some reference photos, though it's a bit messy because I'd just woken up. I didn't take pictures of the bed. I'd definitely stay again.
There were convenience stores, restaurants, and a night market within walking distance, which made it easy to get around. The owner was friendly and pointed out local restaurants and places to visit. This is dorm-style lodging, with clean beds, power outlets, and comfortable, spacious shared areas. I was traveling around Taiwan by motorbike and stayed here the night before heading to Wuling. I was concerned about getting stuck in traffic after entering Taichung city, so staying here worked out well.
The hostel is less than a ten-minute walk from Sanyi Train Station, which was handy when I booked it just after arriving by train. On my solo trip around Taiwan, Miaoli Sanyi was stop number four. Everything felt spotless, from the shared spaces to the bathroom and bedroom, with no dust or odd smells that I could notice. The beds were roomy and had convenient charging access. If you're up for more walking than I was, the Wood Sculpture Museum is about two kilometers away. On the way, there are well-known local noodle shops and pour-over coffee places, so you can make a little outing of it. To catch the bus to Shengxing Station, you can walk to the train station. The host was really helpful and friendly, giving food tips and explaining all the details. I also heard the hostess is a Five Star fan! I'd love to come back to Sanyi with my mom.
I had to change my plans after checking in because of a personal emergency at the last minute. I didn't actually stay overnight, but the hotel booking experience cost me 2,700.
