There’s a small rooftop sitting area where smoking seems to be allowed. Each floor has a toilet, sink, and shower, all in a compact but workable space. The dorm itself was clean, though the lockers were small. It’s far from the station, but Google Maps made it easy to find. A woman at reception greeted me when I arrived. She didn’t smile, but she wasn’t especially rude. I had brought my own towel, which was fine since they didn’t seem to provide them. The outdoor AC unit was noisy. At night, naked men from other rooms wandered in, and it felt frightening and unsettling. Even after I locked the door, they somehow got in again. I stayed because my usual accommodation wasn’t available that day. It’s decent if you want somewhere secluded, but take care about security.

The bunk bed boards creaked loudly whenever someone moved, enough to wake you, and my bed was right beside another one, so its light kept my space bright until the other person turned it off. That physical setup is something you find in most hostels. What happened afterward was the worst accommodation experience I’ve had. This hostel seems well known in the gay community, and most guests appeared to be gay. That didn’t bother me. At check-in, the front desk said they’d put me in a “gay-friendly room.” When I asked, I was told they were full and had arranged a “gay-friendly room” for me. I was confused, since most hostels have gay guests without having “gay-friendly rooms.” I looked it up later and learned what the term meant. From midnight until morning, there were constant sounds of oral sex and masturbation, so I couldn’t sleep. Someone touched my feet during the night, too. Almost nobody shut or locked the room doors, despite the electronic locks, so people came and went freely. On top of worrying about the mattress and sheets being clean, I spent the night unable to sleep and feeling afraid. After searching online, I found that they have regular rooms and “friendly rooms.” They’re all occupied by gay people, which still wasn’t the issue for me, but the meaning of “friendly rooms” seemed clear. If the owner deliberately set up these rooms, I think guests should choose to stay in them. Instead, they assigned guests who didn’t know what they were to those rooms. It was traumatic, and the most disgusting place I’ve ever stayed.

Booking.com charged me NT$500 above the hotel’s actual price. I raised it with Booking.com, and the hotel offered to refund the difference, but Booking.com still hasn’t replied and is ignoring my concerns. I’ve already filed a complaint with the Consumers' Foundation. Please don’t book through Booking.com.
