York Design Hotel

I booked this room for three nights over Lunar New Year after a disgusting Airbnb fell through. At about $37 a night, it wasn't the worst deal for a holiday, and the small room was comfy enough. I only needed a place to sleep, so having no windows was fine for me. The air conditioning was loud, but it covered other noise and had a surprisingly fresh smell. The bathroom flies were the big downside. They kept attacking me while I brushed my teeth and showered, and they were really gross. I still wonder where they came from. The cleaning ladies were kind and said hello whenever I passed. It was an okay stay, especially for a tight budget or a quick night or two.

This was my first hotel in Taipei, and it was affordable and well placed. There are plenty of food options around, from breakfast spots to lunch places local workers go to and good dinner choices. Ximen is within walking distance, and the MRT/Taipei Main station is a quick walk away.

For someone needing one last day before leaving Taipei, this is convenient. It's near the main station and surrounded by shops and food stalls, which makes last-minute souvenir shopping and getting to the airport easy. I stayed one night, though, and the basement room felt stuffy enough that I couldn't see myself staying several days.

The price is very affordable and the location is super convenient. My first impression was awful, though: the ground floor entrance was filthy, with trash piled up. The soundproofing isn't good, and the air conditioning is incredibly noisy, so light sleepers should bring earplugs. I'd only stay again if I really couldn't find a better deal.
