Everything else was great, but I couldn’t sleep properly. Baby bush animals, a kind of monkey family, live in the trees planted and replanted around the retreat and lodge, and they make a lot of noise at night. We woke up two or three times every night. They also came onto the porch, breaking and playing with utensils, plates and glasses. The view, good service and hospitality weren’t enough to make that amount worthwhile when we couldn’t get a full night’s sleep.

We were lucky to spend five nights in paradise, with Thadeo, Sauti (Voice) and all the other friendly staff taking care of us. It was an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime trip, and we’re grateful for the whole experience. If you’re thinking about coming, do it. A travel tip: pay extra to fly straight into Zanzibar. We flew into Dar es Salaam first and took the water ferry, and going direct would have saved us time and a potential headache.

The rooftop plunge pool villa is a special touch, though I’m still not sure the extra charge is worth it. We were impressed by our liaison, Ndaki. The food was good, if not memorable. Asilia has a nice place here. Compared with its other safari properties, it didn’t quite match the mark, but that was a pretty high one.

Matemwe Lodge makes a great escape from the hustle and bustle around much of Zanzibar. It’s a small lodge with breezy, beautiful rooms and lovely views of Mnemba Island. The service is top-level, the food is great, and it has a solid history behind it, along with the support of the safari company Asilia Africa.
