I came for two weeks wanting somewhere simple, quiet and relaxed, and this place suited me perfectly. It's a family-run spot that punches above its weight, though it isn't a five-star hotel like Hyatt, Ritz or Mount Nelson. Ciprian, John and Selma were incredibly helpful. Ask them for local advice, help changing money at a favorable rate, tour information, or a ride. They know the island of Unguja well and can likely arrange transportation further afield too. They even helped me find a bottle of whiskey on short notice, which isn't obvious since there's no bar. And there's always time for a chat or an informal Swahili lesson. The rooms are basic, spotless and well air-conditioned, with a safe and a fridge, though the fridge isn't a minibar. The housekeeping staff were quiet and shy, but wonderful. The restaurant is simple and clean, and if you're quick, you can see into the kitchen, or just ask. Breakfast satisfied, lunch was decent and supper was good. Try anything with octopus. There isn't a bar. Prices seemed cheap compared with what you'd spend at home, so I don't see the point of complaining about them. Matemwe is barely a village, not a metropolis, but it has what you need, including an ATM that was due to open soon. A minute's walk takes you to the beach, and restaurants and bars are available in either direction. The beach is lovely for swimming, without rip tides or huge swells, but with enough movement to be fun. One thing I keep seeing is complaints about hard beds. My sleep app showed long stretches of deep sleep, with almost no snoring or apnea. I felt rejuvenated and blissful. The beds are fine, people, you might just have bad backs. No hotel can cure that.

Our clients booked Zanoceanique from the end of January to the beginning of February for 8 days 2025, but left after only 2 nights because of several problems. The mattresses left them feeling like they were sleeping on wooden boards, and they couldn't sleep. Other complaints apparently say the same. Towels weren't changed, and breakfast didn't even include jam. They moved to another hotel, so we refunded them 500 €. When we asked Zanoceanique to repay us that 500 € for the unused nights, they refused. We reported the matter to the Zanzibar authority responsible for hotels, but the money still wasn't returned. See proof of the refund to our clients. It’s shameful that this hotel doesn’t meet a good standard of hospitality in the tourism industry. This was the worst hotel in all of Zanzibar, in my view.

I had a lovely stay. My room had a sea view, and the beautiful beach was just a very short walk away. The staff were really friendly and made me feel welcome. The restaurant overlooks the pool, with nice spots to relax around the pool and in the gardens.

The seafront setting brings a lovely cool breeze, which is welcome in such hot, humid weather. I loved the hotel, the food and the friendly staff. If I ever return to Zanzibar, this would be my first choice.

The pool and garden are nice, and although the room we'd booked didn't match the pictures, the hotel director kindly moved us to a better one. We appreciated that. The hotel is fairly new and has potential, but there's plenty to improve. We were disappointed, to say the least. The beds were rock hard, service slow, food bad, wifi bad, and they don't serve alcohol. If that's what you're looking for, this is the place for you.
