Al Johari Hotel & Spa

The easy check-in and friendly reception staff were a plus. I booked through Expedia, where the fee was presented as the full bill, but at checkout I was charged another $12 for what they called a city tax. Breakfast on the rooftop was okay, with assorted breads and pastries. The toaster only worked on half its side, so getting toast took a while. Coffee was the weak spot: it was instant, and the milk available was diluted powdered milk. I stayed three nights at Al Johari. My room was pretty “cozy,” with the bed taking up most of the floor and access from only one side. It almost felt designed to make couples cuddle. I’d heard there was a big party outside on Friday nights, and confirmed it myself: people were loud until 2:00AM. I eventually fell asleep, then was up around 6.

As an aromatherapy specialist, I’d advise against using the spa. They use citric oils, which can burn the skin. The staff seemed very unprofessional, and the products had no labels and weren’t kept in a cool, dark place. It’s awful for the price they charge. Don’t go there.

I stayed for three nights and really enjoyed it. The place has good amenities, and the toilet was well equipped. Breakfast at the rooftop restaurant was enjoyable too, with a sea view.

The location in Stone Town made it easy to reach the main tourist spots, and the rooms were clean and spacious. Wi-Fi worked very well. The owner was especially kind, letting us leave our bags at the hotel a week after checkout before our airport trip. The staff were helpful throughout. We had a wonderful stay at Al Johari, thank you!
