We arrived in Kyiv first and then went on to Odessa. We got there much earlier than expected and were exhausted, so it was such a relief that we could stay here. The woman who welcomed us was lovely, even though we may have woken her at 5:45 AM on a Sunday. She said it was fine, and we had coffee early that morning. I was happy to get to talk with her woman to woman, share what was on my mind, laugh, and just have a warm, polite exchange. My family has been out of touch since last Christmas Eve, and it’s been sad having only my spouse beside me. Sometimes it helps to talk with a stranger who lets you smile and laugh for a bit. We left glad we’d met an owner we could talk and laugh with. Be yourself and don’t be afraid to express what’s on your mind. Let it be heard and let your soul be free.

We arrived expecting the room or apartment we’d booked, but people were still living there. After two hours, we were offered another address, where people were also still staying, and it wasn’t clear whether they’d leave. We’d initially been told we could check in at 10:00, then on arrival were told it was 13:00. The woman who had taken the booking was in Turkey.

We liked that we didn’t have to travel far into the city. Alaska is on the outskirts of Kyiv, in the direction of Boryspil. It’s a budget place for spending the night, with several rooms sharing a bathroom. We had some trouble with the hot water during our stay.

We only stayed one night, and the three rooms share a bathroom. I was pleased to get a message explaining check-in and including a map. There’s a corkscrew, plus a microwave, kettle, and dishes. The refrigerator could use a cleaning. For the price, the quality felt right.
