Ardoe House Hotel & Spa

We were in town from Glasgow for a 10:30 funeral the next morning and had to bring our dog, as we had nobody to leave her with. The room was much higher quality than we expected, especially with the dog along, and the £20 dog charge seemed very reasonable. The one-night price was great as well. Everyone we dealt with was really friendly and helpful. Breakfast had a huge range of food, with something for even the fussiest eaters. It was our first stay, and I’d highly recommend the hotel, particularly if you’re travelling with a dog.

We came back for a second stay, and the hotel has that beautiful old stately home feel. It was good value this time, and when we chose to add another night, they matched the price in the app. Breakfast was a substantial buffet with plenty of choice, and the restaurant and bar staff were friendly and helpful. We also loved relaxing in the cosy main lounge, especially when they lit the fire at our request. We’ll be back. The one service issue was that they wouldn’t accept our Northern Irish bank notes, even though they say “sterling” on them. I ended up paying by card, so I’d take a star off for that.

The spa felt a bit average, and it could use more amenities. The jacuzzi wasn’t warm enough, though the sauna was very good. We were there for a birthday treat, and the room was lovely, with a big bed and everything we needed. The food was very good too, and the staff were attentive.

I’m left wondering what I’m getting from this swim-only membership besides frustration and buyer’s remorse. When it was sold to me, I was told there would always be two lanes for swimming, but that hasn’t been true. Kids’ lessons take over the pool until 7pm on weekdays and from 10am to 4pm on weekends, so members are all trying to swim at the same times. There’s room for just two people per lane, and there are never more than two lanes available. I can rarely use the membership for what I bought it for. Last night, kids and babies were still in the pool until 8:30pm. Ardoe needs to schedule some adult-only swimming time. The sauna and steam room are often closed or out of order. When I raise these problems, staff make me feel unreasonable or try to gaslight me. I’ve also emailed the manager and asked for a call back, but never get a response. It feels like the manager is taking the mickey out of swim-only members.
